A blue watercolored background with a silhouette of a bird holding a straw. Within the bird, a sign that reads Welcome to Martha's Vineyard and a house in the background with a blue sky and clouds above fill in the bird.

The Seagull

Presented by the Kean Theatre Conservatory
By Anton Chekhov
Adapted by Thomas W. Jones II
Directed by E. Teresa Choate

Set in the Russian countryside during the late 19th century, this classic comedy . . . scratch that! Chekhov’s The Seagull is about always falling in love with the person who’s never in love with you, about youth slamming into the obstacle of the older generation, about dreams being deferred over and over until you’re ready to explode. The Seagull laughs at the absurdity of life, then and now. In this new adaptation, written for the Kean Theatre Conservatory, the idealistic, early 1970s smacks headlong into the realities of the future. Set in the posh African American enclave of Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard: Shades of Black, Brown, Tan-n-Beige converge to chase tail and seek fame. No one’s longing for Moscow here, but New York City and Hollywood’s calling. And the future is anybody’s guess.

Warning: Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull contains mild profanity, depictions of alcoholism and cocaine use, and references to suicide.
