A woman in a dress holding a fan. To her right and left, paintings of a servant holding a scroll and a man looking down at us. A mansion, statues and trees finalize the background.

Tartuffe

A Kean Theatre Conservatory Production

By Moliére
Translated by Richard Wilbur
Directed by J. Feliciano-Sanchez Moser

The timeless French comedy by Moliére, Tartuffe, or The Hypocrite (1664), is a sharp satire focusing on hyper-religious hypocrisy and the gullible nature of society in the 17th century. The play was almost immediately banned by the French King likely at the urging of the archbishop of Paris.

The play focuses on the relationship between the title character Tartuffe, a proverbial ‘Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing’ posing as a pious priest, and the wealthy upper-class Orgon and his family. Over the course of the play Tartuffe nearly swindles the family out of everything they hold dear.

Tartuffe remains a popular French verse comedy, influencing satire for generations. With themes of deception, loyalty, questioning of blind faith, the dangers of extremism, and the strength and unity of family, Tartuffe remains poignantly relevant, offering perspective on society via a sharp sense of humor.

Recommended Audience

Tartuffe is recommended for ages 13 and up with some mature themes, romance, and physical comedy, with verse text.
