Rosalind. In the city, she’s a girl. In the forest, she’s a boy. In the city, she’s a dutiful princess. In the forest, a wily peasant. In the city, her uncle demands her exile. In the forest, her exiled father awaits. In Shakespeare’s busiest romantic comedy, a boy falls in love with a girl, and then woos a boy to learn how to woo the girl, but the boy happens to be the girl disguised as a boy. And that’s only one of the four sets of lovers-to-be! As You Like It is about being trapped and then escaping to freedom. About being stuck like a caterpillar in a cocoon and then transforming into a glorious butterfly. As You Like It has love letters, cross-dressing, wooing, and wrestling. What’s not to love?! Or as Rosalind observes, “Why then, can one desire too much of a good thing?”
